We listened to stories about boys, bears, beavers and turtles today!

Yellow Bear Chant

Yellow Bear with matted hair, come outside your lair (den). Winter’s gone away. Summer’s here to stay. Hey ye ya na | Hey ye ya na | Hey ye na ya na :||

Yellow Bear stretch and yawn, in the early summer dawn (sunrise). Are you hungry feel your belly, look for meat, hey, do I smell jelly?Hey ye ya na | Hey ye ya na | Hey ye ya na na :||

Yellow Bear what do you see, fish in stream or honeybees?Your eyes are less your nose is best!Hey ye ya na | Hey ye ya na | Hey ye ya na na:||

Yellow Bear Doctor Shash, thank you for protecting us.Summer’s gone away. Winter’s here to stay.

Welcome to KIDS KOLLEGE Native American Children's Story Hour

Kids Kollege Storytellers Harris Richard & Venaya Yazzie at Andrea Kristina's with Kids Kollege flyer

This session (June 25-29, 2007) is for tellers and listeners of stories with a focus on authentic Native American children’s literature. Please visit this blog and our photo ablum of daily updates during the week of June 25-29, 2007.

Sensitive to the time of telling, no Navajo origin or coyote stories will be shared during the summer. We will have to wait until Winter for the telling of those stories. We will do storytelling warm-up activities and activities related to the verbal language stories such as literature circles, creative writing, crafts and creative drama.

We encourage your child/ren to share with you the stories they hear during each session. In addition, we encourage you to share the telling of your own family stories and events with your children. The listening and speaking language development of children is a strong foundation on which to build their literacy skills. Please remember first and foremost, we are storytelling human beings and we will celebrate this rich tradition during our story hour sessions.

Dominic, a Youth Storyteller with Farmington Public Library, will be presenting stories on Wednesday, June 27 and you are invited to attend his performances at 3pm. In addition to Dominic we are pleased to have local story reader Harris Richard, poet and artist Venaya Yazzie, and UNM Native American Children’s Literature summer session participants present stories.

Students who participate in all five sessions will receive a book, compliments of Salina Bookshelf in Flagstaff, AZ.
